Friday Five: Current First World Problems

New York City Marathon is a “wish-list” marathon for me and to have the opportunity to run it is just unbelievable. I still can’t believe I’ll be going soon!

When my husband and I started planning, we decided we’d make a trip out of it because we weren’t sure when we’d be able to visit again. Our number one priority while there (besides the marathon) was:

Seeing a Knicks game.

Well, in the days that we’re there, guess when they play. Just guess. Go on….

THE DAY OF THE MARATHON.

And that would’ve been okay. I would’ve gone to the game barely walking, limping, sore as hell.

BUT IT’S DURING THE MARATHON.

I mean, really??? Really, New York City??? Don’t you guys know there’s a freaking marathon taken place at the same time!!!??

Now before anyone starts blaming us for poor planning, the NBA schedule was released only a couple of weeks ago. We booked our hotel and flights the day we found out we’d be doing NYC. And yes, we’ve checked to see how much it would be to stay longer and extend our flight (because they play again the day we leave at the exact hour of our flight). The price to make the changes would be outrageous. Ridiculously outrageous.

So we’re bummed…..really bummed 😦

Why is this such a big deal, you ask? Well, because:

This was our Broadway play/show/etc.

For some, going to New York means having to see a show or play. For us, seeing a Knicks game is the equivalent. It was going to be our “main event” so to speak. What we were looking forward to the most.

We are HUGE basketball fans.

Both my husband and I are big basketball people. I grew up watching the NBA for as long as I can remember. Some of my favorite players played for the Knicks. I wasn’t alive to see Willis Reed or Walt Frazier but I loved reading about them and seeing classic clips. Growing up Patrick Ewing was a fave and I had a HUGE crush on Allan Houston (anyone remember him?).

Houston, we most certainly DO NOT have a problem.

I was bummed when Stoudemire left our Suns to play for the Knicks, but I wished him well (and now he’s retired so I wouldn’t see him anyway, lol). I’m not a huge Carmelo fan but with the addition of Derrick Rose, the Knicks would be actually kind of exciting to see.

Madison Square Garden is a historical landmark (to us)

There are arenas and stadiums whose name everyone can recognize, and this is one of them. Of course, New York City offers some impressive landmarks like the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the World Trade Center museums (all which we do want to see), but a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden would’ve been a huge check off our list. Huge.

We bond over basketball.

My husband likes to run but he doesn’t love to run like I do. He’ll go to museums with me but they wouldn’t be his first choice of places to visit. If we didn’t go up the Empire State Building or swing by to check out Carrie Bradshaw’s NYC home, he’d be totally okay with it.

But the one thing we both can agree on, we both would be ridiculously happy doing, is watching a Knicks game at the Garden. It would be a memory we’d treasure forever, as corny as that sounds. When we went to Chicago last year, we were giddy taking a picture in front of Jordan’s statue outside the United Center.

 I heart Mike.

The GOAT.

Basketball is OUR thing.

We’re not sure when we’ll be back to New York.

After (hopefully) completing NYC Marathon, we’re not sure when we’ll come back to visit. We know if we do come back, it will be with our kids and when they’re older. I can count on the Knicks being around then, but I’m worried about Madison Square Garden. I’m worried that what happened to Yankee Stadium will happen to MSG. And it really won’t be the same visiting a renovated Madison Square Garden. It just wouldn’t.

So there you have it. My current first world problems. No Knicks game for Helly. Tear.

–What current problem/situation (that’s really not that big of a deal) has you bummed?

–Are you a basketball fan? What sports team would you like to see play in person?

4 Fitness Trends No Way In Hell I’ll Try (and 1 I will!)

Well hello there Friday, how you doin’?

Hi everyone!! I’m linking up again with the DC Trifecta ladies Cynthia, Mar, and Courtney for their weekly Friday Five. Today’s topic are fitness trends you’re just not that into.

Screen Shot 2015-06-26 at 9.01.39 AM

There’s a few of those on my list and I’ve included 4, but I thought I add one trend that I am into as well:

1. Mud Runs

Even before the poop fiasco that caused severe eye damage to a woman, I was never into mud runs. It’s just not my thing and not something you’ll find me doing. Ever.

2. Taking Running Selfies

I have a few friends who take pretty awesome pictures of themselves running and have been asked how they do it since, well, they’re running. I guess you prop your phone/camera and video play while you run, then snapshot it when you see a good angle?? I’m not entirely sure how it’s done but I find it kind of a lot comical thinking of re-enacting myself running to get a picture. I’m already awkward as it is.

3. Plexxus, Shakeology, Herbal Life

Man, there’s so many of these types of shake thingys, I can’t keep track of them all or know what each one is all about. What I do know is that I like food. A lot. And not in liquid form.

4. Body Wraps

They may have worked for somebody, but I’m not interested.

5. Being Social <—–

This is a yes, most definitely. I’m all about joining/running with a group and/or keeping tabs with running friends online through social media–it makes training so much more fun!

And thankfully, there’s a lot of good going on 😀

1. Drugs

Whoa, whoa, whoa, before anyone gets the wrong idea, let me remind you that I’ve been sick forever for a long time. I finally made my way to a doctor who prescribed me some medication and YAY!! I’m finally feeling better.

2. My first run back

Because of the aforementioned good thing, I was finally able to go out for a run after a 10+ day hiatus. It wasn’t the best run ever, but it felt sooo good to get back out there. My husband joined me so it made the run even better.

Totally feeling like I'm starting over here....

Starting over..

3. MRTT

I’ve mentioned that I’m a part of several running groups, but right now I’m especially happy with how the Moms Run This Town group I lead is progressing. I started our local chapter about a year ago and picked up my buddy Jennifer@We’re Running a Marathon along the way to help co-lead. And despite still being relatively new, we’ve grown our young group to almost 100 members!

And it’s not just about the numbers. There have been several meet-ups and group runs and great conversations and it’s just been awesome. Starting something and having no idea how it will turn out only to see it going well is def a GOOD thing 😀

Check out the main website for an MRTT group near you! (sorry dudes, girls only)

4. A surprise in the works

I’m so pumped!! I’ve mentioned I think a while back, how my brother has picked up running. Last year, my brother, sister, and I ran our first (and my brother’s first) sibling 5k.

Family 5k fun!

Family 5k fun!

Since then, he’s been a running machine!

Like for real. My (former) 300lb, 6’2 brother has lost 50 pounds!!! FIFTY!! He’s been running and cross training and most recently, almost exactly a year after his first 5k, he ran another one and finished in 27:56. YOU READ THAT RIGHT. He freakin’ rocked that 5k beating his previous time by 5 minutes!!

He has his sights set on running a half marathon and has been training for it the past couple of months. He sends me pics of his long runs–5 miles one week, 6 miles another week, and I’ve seriously been the most proudest sister ever.

I have to see him run this half.

Soooooooo, my awesome, amazing, I’m-so-freakin-lucky-to-have-him husband bought me tickets to go see him run!!! In Ohio!!

I have no idea if my brother reads my blog. I don’t think he does. He doesn’t know I’m going!

I did call my sister though, to kinda help with logistics, and she suggested I run it too! She’s running it, and she said it would benfun for all of us to start together and give my brother a sibling send off.

You guys, I’m so insanely excited about this.

We'll be running the half! :D

We’ll be running the half! 😀

5. Birthday girl

Finally, the best good thing…

my daughter turned 3 yesterday ❤

Threeeee!!!!!

Threeeee!!!!!

Her party is tomorrow and seriously, I can’t believe how fast these 3 years have gone by. I have a 3 year old and this summer, I’ll have a 2 year old as well!! Gahh!!!

I hope everyone has a great weekend (with great weather!)!!

❤ , helly
