Hanson’s/NYC Marathon Training: Week 17

Welp, the moment we’ve all I’ve been waiting for–RACE WEEK!!!

Marathon Goal– 3:50
Marathon Pace/Tempo Runs– 8:45
Strength Runs–8:35

Easy Runs–9:40-10:40
Long Runs–9:30

But first, last week’s numbers…

Monday, October 24th–5 Easy Miles @9:41 avg. pace

A little faster than “easy pace” miles with a friend. But like always, a good convo makes the run go by faster.

Tuesday, October 25th–8 miles: 1 mile WU, 5 miles @Strength Pace (w/400R), 1 mile CD

Strength pace is 8:35/mile and each mile of this workout was way faster than that. I have no idea how that happened. It was dark out when I started (at 4:45 in the morning) so I only saw my splits when the mile would beep. Each time, I would look in disbelief as I didn’t feel like I was pushing or working myself. I’d try to adjust, only to see the next mile be almost exactly the same.

I was running with a buddy who is usually meticulous with pacing but even he was off. We were just chatting along. It was cool to see this be a sort of conversation pace for me as I’d had had an awful training week the week before. Nevertheless, I knew that I should be more disciplined with my pacing so close to marathon day.

Wednesday, October 26th–Rest Day

Milked it. I knew I had a hard run the next day.

Thursday, October 27th–12 miles: 1 mile WU, 10 miles at Tempo/Race pace, 1 mile CD

I was a little worried about this run, not gonna lie. Last week’s tempo run was awful so I was going into this one not very optimistic.

But it went GREAT.

It was crazy o’clock in the morning again (4:30 start time) and I got in 3 miles on my own before meeting up with my run club. Then I ran with my Tuesday pacing buddy and it was deja vu. Each mile was faster than what it should’ve been and again, it didn’t feel hard. We chatted the entire way and then he left me on my last two miles.

This run was the confidence booster I needed. I was a little sad after last week’s struggles and this week’s two big runs (Strength & Tempo) had gone so well, it really helped ease some of the race anxiety I had already started to build up.

Friday, October 28th–Rest Day

This was an unexpected race day. I slept in with the intentions of running in the evening but then I remembered later that my book club had it’s monthly meet-up and that sounded so much better. I didn’t even feel guilty about missing a run.

Saturday, October 29th–8 Long Run Miles @9:22 avg. pace

I met up with my NYC training buddies for this run and it was just so much fun. Relaxed, social, and it flew by before I knew it.

Sunday, October 30th–6.2 Easy Miles @9:53

It was my Moms Run This Town’s Halloween run and by buddy and I made our own little 10k out of it 🙂

six point two witchy miles

Which brought me to a grand total of 39.2 miles for the week. I seriously can’t believe that race week is NOW. I’ve already started packing and mentally preparing myself–trying my hardest to keep the nerves at bay. I keep thinking about the bridges and the hills and getting scared, but I know I’ve worked hard and what’s done is done. All I can do is show up confident with my training.

I’ve never worked so hard in my life and I definitely know I’m a different runner than I was 5 months ago. Geeze…..5 months. FIVE months of training.

Holy cow.

–How do you keep the racing nerves at bay?

–It’s been 90 degrees+ here. There’s no way I can prepare for NYC weather.
(I realize that ^ wasn’t a question, lol)

–I’ve been hydrating like a mad woman, carb loading smartly, resting as much as I can–what else should I be doing?

Week 6 sucked.

It happens and it’s over and I’m moving on–but I’ll give a quick recap in case you’re wondering what the hell happened.

Monday, August 8th–Rest Day

You read that right. I didn’t run. So after the previous day’s 12 miler, I started feeling a little niggle in my right shin. I iced it and continued my usual rolling and stretching but in the evening, I could still feel it. My husband was leaving Monday morning for an out-of-the-country work trip (for the whole week!) but I’d planned on running before he left for the airport. I couldn’t though. I could still feel a little throb when I woke up and even though it was insignificant, it was significant enough for me to say rest. So I did.

I iced throughout the day and felt a little better. But that night, I hardly slept. I’ve always been a horrible sleeper but it intensifies when my husband’s not home (Michelle, you are my hero). I must have gotten maaaaybe 3 hours of not continuous sleep.

Tuesday, August 9th–1 mile WU, 2×1200 w/400 R, 1 mile CD

I modified the day’s workout from 4x1200 to 2x12oo for a few reasons. One, my shin. Two, I was completely exhausted from not having slept the night before. Three, I had to do this workout in the evening in 100+ degree weather. Not an ideal time to do speed work. Nonetheless, I was able to nail it.

I was really proud of this run. I did it solo and felt good despite everything and really wanted to do the full workout but I reeled myself in. I definitely needed this confidence booster though.

Wednesday, August 10thRest Day

This is Hanson’s regularly scheduled rest day. I wrote a post on how I decided to modify the plan (and more on why) to ensure I make it the whole way through.

Thursday, August 11th–Rest Day

The lack of sleep was catching up to me and I just couldn’t. Tempo run, not done.

Friday, August 12th–3.75 Easy miles

The modified plan said 4 miles (four!) and I almost got all of it in. I took my son for a run around the block and we chatted the whole way. It was a fun run as I hadn’t done a run with him in a looong time. I’m excited for cooler weather to do it more often.

Saturday, August 13th–6 Easy miles

One of the things I plan on making sure I do better this time around is running my easy runs easy. My easy range is 9:40-10:40 and my easy runs have been around the 10:00 minute range. I want them more at the 10:20-10:30 range from now on. I think this will help my situation. Sunday’s run: 10:16 average pace. Getting there.

Sunday, August 14th–5.8 Easy miles

This was my Moms Run This Town Summer Sparkler 5k. I had been planning and organizing for months for this race and was excited the day had finally come. My chapter co-leader and #brf Foxy Jen (she’s running Chicago for Team Fox) and I ran 4 miles before the race, then we ran 1.5 miles mapping the 5k course.

I ended this week with ~20 miles. Quite a down week in mileage compared to previous weeks but I needed it. My leg is feeling SO much better and I’ve been catching up on sleep. I’m def ready to take on the rest of the training plan 🙂

Hanson’s/NYC Marathon Training: Week 3

Holy Helly mileage!!! I’ve seriously never run so much in my life.

The plan:

Marathon Goal– 3:50
Marathon Pace/Tempo Runs– 8:45
Easy Runs–9:40-10:20
Long Runs–9:29

Monday, July 18th– Easy 6 miles, 9:37 avg

I met up with a buddy for these easy miles and we insanely did them in the evening amidst an oncoming monsoon storm.

Tuesday, July 19th– 1 mile WU, 8×600 (w/400R), 1 mile CD=7 miles total (+3 easy miles in the evening)=10 miles

The goal for the 600s (what an awkward distance btw) was 2:51 and even though I had programmed the workout on my watch, I forgot to set the target pace so I had no idea where I was supposed to be. I had a vague idea (I thought it was 2:55) and stuck with that but even then, I struggled getting these done.

I was definitely disappointed when I got home and saw that I missed the mark. I don’t know if it was travel fatigue (and training fatigue) but the run was hard. Plus, it was one of those where I ran in the evening the night before and then ran in the morning the next day. #excuses

And then, maybe to punish myself, I ran again in the evening with a friend. It was an easy (yet hard b/c omg, heat) run and I did it pushing my 4 year-old daughter in the stroller.

Wednesday, July 19th–GLORIOUS REST DAY

I milked it.

Thursday, July 20th–1 mile WU, 6 Tempo @8:45 pace, 1 mile CD

I was determined to do this tempo run well but it took a while for me to warm up, jaja! It was effing ridiculous at 5 in the morning (86 degrees with 46% humidity).

Friday, July 21st–Easy/Hilly 6 miles 9:51 avg

This was seriously crazy. There’s been a few moments already in this training where I’ve questioned my sanity. But yeah, I woke up at 4 to drive 30 minutes to run 6 miles of hills. Luckily, I met up with some friends and we had pretty amazing views that made it worth it.

Saturday, July 23rd–6 easy miles, 10:16 avg

I made sure to take these reeeeally easy considering I had two days of tough running. Four out of the 6 miles were in the 10 minute range.

And I made it home in time for a little Birthday Breakfast celebration  ❤

Sunday, July 24th–10 miles Long Run @9:29 goal pace

I had to wake up early again for this one since we had my son’s actual birthday part in the morning. I started at 4:45 a.m. and did 4 miles by myself before meeting up with my MRTT friends at 5:30 and doing the last 6 with them.

It was hot, it was windy. Same ‘ol, same ‘ol.

First 4–10:04, 8:58, 9:12, 9:13

Last 6–9:48, 9:14, 9:30, 9:40, 9:31, 10:00

I did not mind one bit slowing down to run with my friends for the last 6. I was tired and the company was way better than hitting the paces solo. I ended up with a 9:31 average anyway=WIN.

In fact, I was so tired, that on the last mile I tripped over a piece of raised sidewalk, flew, and fell hard. This was actually the first time I’ve ever fallen! Crazy, since I often run on the trails but til Sunday, I’ve lucked out. Luckily, I was able to adjust mid-air and prepare for the fall; I only had a small scratch on my hip and spared the rest of my body.

I showered and went straight to party mode as my son’s superhero birthday party was at 9:30 a.m.!!

To say I was exhausted after this week is an understatement. I ran 46 miles this week–the most I’ve ever ran in my life, including the week I’ve run a marathon. Here’s hoping it’s all worth it and Hanson’s gets me the PR I’ve been coveting!! 😀
